Ancestor Dances (erforance excerts) – FESCH.TV

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

Description:
7 small dances for 7 new ancestors. When we think of the ones who came before us, sometimes we are speaking of the ancient distant ones and collective community teachings. But the „new ancestors“ also shared teachings. „Ancestor Dances“ is inspired by the tales, movements, habits and gestures of 7 of my recently deceased ancestors. The dance is a translation of their adventures, iconic advice and wisdom phrases into choreography. It is my way to remember them, to honor them and to share their stories with the world.

Dance Performance & Choreography: Maura García (non-enrolled Cherokee & Mattamuskeet)

Maura García is a dancer, choreographer and erotic artist. Her vibrant creations channel the sensual rhythms of the natural world and inspire people to liberate themselves. She makes original work and collaborates with other creatives and clients to produce: new dance works, music videos, theatre productions, fashion shows, sex shows, live music shows, site specific works, special events and erotic art. At the root, Maura’s luscious work is powered by a desire to bring ancestral wisdom to life, to heal through pleasure and to bring happiness to people.

Music: Mark Gabriel Little
Original music score designed by Mark Gabriel Little (MGL). MGL specializes in creating sound and music for the performing arts, film and gallery exhibitions. Seeking to meld the soft cries of the natural world, noise from everyday life and rhythms from around the world, works are created in close collaboration with other artists.

Projections: James Pakootas (Colville Confederated Tribes)
James Pakootas weaves music, film and spoken word together to create empowering stories. Whether on stage or in the studio he brings his personal and community stories of resilience to all of his work.

Photos provided by Maura García and Ahyoka Youngdeer (Cherokee Nation). The people are their blood ancestors and other beloved deceased community members.

This performance was recorded by Chris Randle at the 2022 Matriarch’s Uprising Festival held at the Dance Centre, Vancouver, BC Canade.
