Work on Myself – FESCH.TV

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

Directed by Faye Suthern
Work on Myself comments on the detrimental pressure people feel to alter themselves as a result of social media. Such obsessive thoughts surrounding looks are perpetuated everywhere, and become increasingly more inescapable when internalised especially at a young age. The piece focuses on myself realising that working on yourself does not have to encompass changing your appearance.
The scrapbook element symbolises how facial features are picked apart and either praised or scrutinised, or even both. Platforms, such as Pinterest, allow for ‘inspiration’ boards to be created for makeup looks, hairstyles, fashion and workout routines. Although such a tool can be used positively, surrounding oneself with photos of models truly alter the perception of themself. The features I chose were from boards that I had created myself before this project.
The editing initially starts as a way to progress the story, but as it continues it is symbolic of how chaotic these online worlds are, and how we are bombarded with so much content all at once. It also mirrors a kaleidoscope which reinforces the idea that our vision of ourselves is becoming increasingly altered and unstable everyday.
