We love music!

For this special evening at the magCulture Shop, we celebrated the music magazine. Once so influential, the genre is often regarded today as lost. Yet the music section of our Shop carries a selection of over 12 specialist music titles, some of which have been published for many years, while others are brand new.

Recorded on Thursday 27 October 2022.

The video opens with Paul Gorman in conversation with magCulture’s Jeremy Leslie, discussing his book ‘Totally Wired’ and its themes.

The book tells the story of the evolution of the music press from the 50s to the present day, mapping its huge influence on culture in the UK and US. As well as the big names—New Musical Express, Sounds, Rolling Stone, Creem—Gorman shares others that were just as infleuntial in their own way: titles such as Black Music, Rave and Collusion. It’s a brilliant book that charts the heyday of the music press, its influence on the later style/fashion titles like The Face and Blitz, and on to today.

Paul and Jeremy will then be joined by editors of current music magazines:

Paul Benney Editor of recent launch Disco Pogo (and also co-founder of nineties mag Jockey Slut)

Kirsty Allison Editor of literary mag Ambit and its music-focused sibling Ambit Pop. Kirsty was previously floor editor at DJMag.
