Virágom, Virágom (2022) – FESCH.TV

Virágom, Virágom (2022) & FESCH.TV:

„It has been theorised by philosophers and artists that time is a flat circle, with the past dictating the future as history is doomed to repeat itself. Anna Járai utilises these hypotheses and revitalises them, focusing her gaze on folk communities in the experimental short film Virágom, Virágom (translated from Hungarian as “My Flower, My Flower”). By splicing old footage of ceremonies and traditions with present-day interpretations, Járai creates a wholly unique experience, which simultaneously shows the parallels as well as the changes between the two time periods. Tying everything together (in a literal and metaphorical sense) are the superimpositions of fluorescent pink threads, adding further layers amongst the bright, colourful filters and grayscale videos. Aside from the fantastic, well-edited visuals, the audience is treated to a mix of catchy folk music and spoken word poetry, cementing the joyous atmosphere. Virágom, Virágom also showcases minorities within these folk communities. Rather than imitating the past as the above-mentioned philosophers profess, Járai demonstrates modernised versions of weddings and rituals that were established to ostracise women and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Now recontextualised in an inclusive fashion, the film promotes harmony whilst remaining true to the ancestral roots that inspired it.“ Review by Nathan Hardie, Encounters Film Festival 2022 ()
