TOP TEN: Stan, Alexandra

She was born as Alexandra Ioana Stan in Constanța, a port-city in Romania close to the Black Sea. She showed an interest in music from a very young age and after she dropped out of Faculty of Management Andrei Șaguna she pursued a music career. She gave her singing debut in a Romanian tv show at the age of 15 and started to participate in music contests. She was discovered by Romanian producers Marcel Prodan and Andrei Nemirschi in a karakoe bar and signed to a record deal. Her debut single „Lollipop (Pam Pam Pam)“ was released in 2009 and got significant airplay in her homecountry.

In 2010 she released her breakthrough single „Mr. Saxobeat“. It first peaked at the Romanian single charts at #1 for 8 straight weeks and from there topped the charts in various European countries such as Germany, Italy, Austria and many more. It peaked at #3 in the UK, #6 in France and #21 in the US Billboard Single Charts. The single finished #2 in the German Year-End Charts as well and in November 2020 reached 200 million streams on Spotify, making it the most successful song out of Romania on the plattform. Stan released her debut album ‚Saxobeats‘ in 2011 which peaked at #29 in Germany and #15 in Japan. There the album was re-issued as ‚Cliché (Hush Hush)‘ in 2013.

After a hiatus that included a hospital stay, which she attributed to violence by Prodan, she returned in 2014 with the album ‚Unlocked‘ and the single ‚Thanks For Leaving‘ which she stated was personal. In 2015 she released a collaboration with fellow Romanian country woman Inna called ‚We Wanna‘, which became a moderate success. In 2016 she released her 3rd studio album ‚Alesta‘ and in 2018 ‚Mami‘ her 4th studio album was released.
