TOP TEN: Lindenberg, Udo

He was born in Germany and started his musical career as a drummer. In 1969 he founded his first band Free Orbit, before he collaborated with Klaus Doldinger in 1970. His breakthrough came in 1973 with his album ‚Andrea Doria‘ and 2 singles which sold well. This brought him a very lucrative record deal – with his brash style, everyday subject matter and feel for the language he pioneered for other German artists like Marius Müller-Westernhagen and Stefan Waggershausen to name a few. He released multiple albums in the 70s which all charted and reached the Top 10 in Germany. His biggest success came with a song in 1983 when he covered ‚Chattanoogo Choo Choo‘ and adressed in the lyrics then GDR president Erich Honecker and his wish to perform in the country. His song helped him get the permission and he finally was able to perform in the GDR. Lindenberg received the Echo (German’s ‚Grammy‘)- Lifetime achievement award even though his career was far from over. In 2011 he recorded an MTV session which helped him back into the charts and the spotlight. He is one of the most influential pop-rock musicians and artist in German music history.
