TOP TEN: Abdul, Paula

She was born as Paula Julie Abdul as daughter to Jewish parents in California, USA. Her father is of Syrian Jewish heritage, raised in Brazil and emigrated to the United States, while her mother was a concert pianist. Paula began taking dance lessons at an early age in ballet, tap and jazz. She received a scholarship to a dance camp at the age of 15 and appeared in a low budget independendent musical film in 1980. She then became one of the cheerleaders for the Los Angeles Laker and within a year she became the head chereographer. She was a Laker-girl until 1986.

Abdul was discovered by The Jacksons, when they attended a Los Angeles Lakers game. She did the chereography for their video ‚Torture‘ and then for various video of Janet Jackson as well as for the
‚Victory‘-tour of The Jacksons. From there Paula Abdul asked to record an album herself and was granted the wish.

In 1988 her debut album ‚Forever Your Girl‘ was released and became a massive success. It topped the album charts in the USA, Australia and Canada and reached the Top 3 in the UK. It has been certified 7x platinum in the USA and Canada. 4 singles of the album went to #1 of the Single Charts, setting a new record: ‚Straight Up‘, ‚Forever Your Girl‘, ‚Cold Hearted‘ and ‚Opposites Attract‘. She won the Grammy Award for the music video of ‚Opposites Attract‘.

Her 2nd studio album ‚Spellbound‘ was released in 1991 and topped the US album charts again, while peaking at #3 in Australia, #4 in the UK and #6 in Canada and Sweden. It has been certified 5x platinum in Canada and triple platinum in the USA. 2 more singles of the album topped the US Hot 100 Single Charts: ‚Rush Rush‘ and ‚The Promise Of A New Day‘. In December 1991 Paula Abdul was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

After a hiatus she returned with her 3rd studio album ‚Head Over Heels‘ in 1995, which peaked at #18 in the US album charts. She then mostly worked as a chereographer for various tv-shows and movies again.
