TOP TEN: 2 Unlimited

This week Dutch radio station Q-Music is broadcasting ‚De Foute 1500‘ – basically a chart with all guilty pleasure-songs. On this occasion I bring to you one of my favorite ‚Guilty Pleasure‘ Artist from the Netherlands: They were formed in the early 90s by Belgian producers Jean-Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde and fronted by the Dutch duo of vocalist Anita Doth and rapper Ray Slijngaard. They relesed their debut single ‚Get Ready For This‘ in 1991. It peaked at #10 in the Netherlands, #8 in Belgium and #2 in Australia and the UK. Three years after its original release it also hit the Top 40 in the USA, peaking at #38.

The follow-up single ‚Twilight Zone‘ became their first #1 in the Netherlands, while it also peaked at #2 in the UK. Their debut album ‚Get Ready!‘ was then released in 1992 and peaked in #10 in Australia and #12 in the Netherlands. Their major breakthrough then came in 1993 when they released ‚No Limit‘ – their first single from their upcoming album ‚No Limits‘. It topped the charts in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and many other countries, while peaking at #2 in Germany and #7 in Australia. The album also topped the UK charts and reached Top 10 across Europe and Australia.

Their 3rd album ‚Real Things‘ was released in 1994 and again topped the album charts in the UK and Netherlands while it also peaked at #3 in Germany and reached Top 10 across Europe. The lead single ‚The Real Thing‘ became their 3rd and final chattopper in the Netherlands and reached Top 10 in various European countries.

After a Best of album release in 1995 both Doth and Slijngaard decided to leave the project. To replace them De Coster and Wilde recruited 2 Dutch women: Romy van Ooijen and Marjon van Iwaarden. After they released a couple of singles and the album ‚II‘ and without the success of the charismatic Doth and Slijngaard they left in 1999.

The band came back together in the 2010s for some concerts but their best days were behind them. Here now I present to you my favorite 10 songs of this project/duo, hope you enjoy! What are your favorites? Write in the comments and discuss this ranking, but please keep it civil. Thank you!
