The Nomad WIP

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

THEME
“The Nomad” (working title) is an Igbo language moving image piece that explores travel, movement, displacement as a channel for self-discovery and the interconnectedness of memory and value in one’s self. By opening oneself up to shared experiences, to learn from others, to open up one’s heart to strangers and the love and freedom that comes from that. It ends with the character realising that no matter where she goes or how far and how long she travels, the most important thing is not the destination but the journey itself as it on the journey that we learn to love, to empathise, to understand and to be able to receive whatever message life has for us. That journey also is life itself.

TREATMENT
This project is really about my personal life as it is with most of my projects. I write about my own thoughts and experiences. “The Nomad” was born out of a longing to travel. Travel (especially ground travel) to me is like therapy. To see the world not only through my eyes but also through the eyes of those that I meet along the way, to share stories and create memories. I recently had the urge to travel from Lagos to Kano by train as I was in need of guidance and direction, and this idea came to me. In writing this film, I realised however that getting to Kano was not the key to lifting my spirit or finding answers but enjoying the journey as a whole no matter the outcome.
It is a mix of poetry and film as dialogue is replaced with a voice over recitation (herein translated from Igbo to English).

POETRY VOICEOVER

Tracing circle trails in pursuit of meaning.
Iso ntuzi gbala okilikili n’ebe m na acho nghota

A meaning that consumes and yet eludes.
Nghota nke na elepia ma na agbanahu kwa

I know that a thousand deaths await me before my final moment.
Ama m na onwu otu puku na echem tupu m’lute na oge ikpeazu m.

To die unto myself is to be reborn;
Inwu na onwem bu imuhalim ozo.

A new butterfly blessing the earth with it’s colourful grace.
Nru ububa ofuu bu onyinye nyele uwa, n’achputa na amala ya.

And so again, I wonder off in search of pastures no greener than what I left behind.
Nke ozo bu, m na ejeghali n’achoghali ebe ita nni nke ka achaputa akwukwo ndu kalia nke m rapulu ebe m si.

I traverse borders , boundaries and barriers
M na ejeru ebe ani kwusili, ebe agbala oke na ebe ife mgbochi digasi

And find myself in spaces so familiarly unfamiliar
M we fu onwe m na ebe di ka odoro m anya ma na odochasighi m anya

With faces so distant they feel like home
N’iru ndi mmadu ndi difere anya ma dikwa ka obu n’uno

Only time will decide the fate of this traveller, but move I must
Soso oge ga ekpebi akala aka onye ije a, mana ojije, m ma ejelili.

And in this movement I realise that the journey is the greenest pasture,
N’ime ije a, o wee doo m anya na ije a na onwe ya bu ebe ita nni nke chaputala na akwukwo ndu

And the destination, Just another stop in this never ending trail of movement.
Mana njedebe ya, di ka nkwusi ozo na uzo ije a, nke na adiro agwu agwu.
