FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

Hi, everyone. Ben here to give you an update on some of the latest treatments, technologies and research that exists in the world of obstructive sleep apnoea. Traditionally, CPAP was the major treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea but, as some of you out there may well know, they aren’t, for some people, the easiest machines to get used to. A lot of people will not manage to use them for any particularly long time at all and will give them away and some people who persist with them will only manage to use them for a short period of the night and might not be able to use them enough to control their symptoms adequately.

The good news is that the latest research is showing us that custom-made oral appliances can be as effective as CPAP machines. So, CPAP these days is certainly still a really good tool for people with more heavy-duty sleep apnoea. A lot of people with more mild and moderate sleep apnoea and snoring issues can do really beautifully with a custom-made oral appliance and some of those people who have severe sleep apnoea can still do really nicely with an oral appliance as well.

We’ve recently started making our oral appliances in a 3D-printed sort of fashion. They’re made out of a nylon material which is thinner and lighter, but at the same time also stronger than what we used to be able to provide and I’ve had lots of patients who’ve experienced our oral appliances and also now our newer appliances and have really enjoyed the changed that these ones can bring in terms of the comfort that exists for them.

We get referrals from sleep physicians; ear, note and throat surgeons and general practitioner doctors; and very often they are now recommending, as they send their patients in to see us, as the first line of treatment one of these appliances, to help them with sleep apnoea issues: tiredness, snoring. So, it certainly is now an absolute first-line treatment for many patients with those sort of problems. And the vast bulk of the people who we treat with these appliances continue to use them in the long term and find that they get really wonderful results, both often for them, and sometimes not so much for them but for their partners, they can be extremely beneficial. And we’re really confident in the new material backed up by the research and I think they’re a fantastic option for lots of people who have these sort of problems.
