Sustainability in Making panel discussion – FESCH.TV

Sustainability in Making panel discussion & FESCH.TV:

This session was recorded at Crafty Fox Connects – a conference for makers held at London’s Museum of the Home, run by Crafty Fox Market.

Sustainability in Making panel discussion, chaired by Hannah Sturrock – Crafty Fox Market with panellists: Jess Chan (Jess Chan Textiles), Annie from Raising Ravers, and Hils MacDonald from Muffat Prague.

About Jess Chan: Jess Chan is a designer maker specialising in printed textiles and natural dyes, with colour playing an important role within the design process. Her designs are inspired by botanical nature and geometry, intertwining texture through mark making.

Jess’ research into natural dyes has led to an Artist Residency in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Since completing her MA in Textile Design at Chelsea College of Art in 2011, she has taught short courses at Central Saint Martins and currently works at Wimbledon College of Art as a Dye Technician. Jess also provides a Print and Dye consultancy service within the Fashion and Costume Industry. Jess supports the charity Tree Sisters through her work.

About Raising Ravers: Raising Ravers is a fun, festival inspired children’s clothing brand created by Annie with conscious values at it’s core.

Raising Ravers garments are not mass produced cheaply. They are made in small quantities, they are quality pieces made to last. The aim is for each piece to become a treasured heirloom to be passed down to siblings or friends for years to come. The relaxed oversized style and some clever features mean garments are ‘designed to fit for longer’ which is great for your pocket and our planet. Annie works with fabrics from her own personal archive, lovingly curated from travels around the world over the last 20 years, as well as locally sourced and designer deadstock fabrics. She personally hand makes the garments so there are no awful sweatshops involved and minimal carbon footprint. Annie is committed to working with a zero waste approach using the scraps of fabric to make masks, scrunchies and bunting.

About Muffat Prague: Muffat Prague is a creative partnership centred around sustainability created by Hils & Rob. Their work revolves around their original bird shaped design, in 3D and 2D illustrative forms. They use sustainable materials across all their work made in small batches from FSC certified and reclaimed wood from trees felled across the capital, UK produced eco brass and papers from recycled coffee cups. They’re currently developing a wearable design made from recycled plastics from their studio space at Somerset House.
