Substratum of memories (2021)

The main goal of this project is to interpretate the relationship that people had with spaces. More in specific, spaces, houses or particular divisions which had a special meaning for that person in a specific context.

Spaces, houses or particular divisions which were a stage of important or traumatic events are the ones in which my focus will relay. When we travel back in memory to those special places, the image that appears in our mind is a result of an emotional construction. Short flashbacks reveal objects, peculiarities with which we developed special boundaries. In fact, the space and its objects that is being described might not correspond totally to the reality but instead an interpretation of it. What we strongly believe that it really looked like.

As the author Gaston Bachelard mentioned in his “The poetics of space” the childhood is most certainly bigger than reality and the dreams and inconscient are more powerful than the thought.

Three participants answered a questionnaire written by me. The participants were asked to described a house division and its objects that marked them the most in the positive or negative way. After collecting all the descriptions from the participant, I interpretated and recreated those spaces. For that, I resorted to a transdisciplinary approach that helped to decipher and gave shape to reference objects.
