Yana P. is a young woman from Ukraine who is HIV positive and who decided to protest and to fight against the discrimination against young people like her. She made her voice heard even in a UN event where she delivered a speech about HIV positive youth. Yana S. is also a young Ukrainian activist. She fights for the rights of youth to be informed and receive sexual education and for the rights of the LGBTQI+ community. Their resistance stories inspire girls their age and challenges a society marked by the totalitarian trauma.

`“YP: The state told us – „here’s the pills and that’s all“. And we wanted doctors to talk to us, to give us more information, not just to be given some pills, to have real support. Especially since Ukraine is one of the countries with the highest infection risk in Europe! That’s how I started to change, to talk about the fact that I was HIV positive without the fear of being stigmatized. I understood that there will be situations in which I can be discriminated, but on the other hand I don’t care, nobody except my loved ones can insult me.
YS: Some feminists came to my highschool with workshops. The girls talked to us about the different types of discrimination. Back then I didn’t know homophobia existed. Our literature professor started joking about how all feminists are lesbians, and I yelled that I was a lesbian. It was just fun to yell out. I’m Gaaaaay! Woaa, it feels so good to say this. Gaaaay! What could they do to me?“

This is the eighth episode of the video monologues series „Resistance is a Girl Who Changes the World“, part of the international cultural project „Stories of Girls‘ Resistance“.

About the project:
The global project debuted in November 2020 and will encompass a total of 120 stories told in 5 different languages about girls from 65 countries who are changing the world. The stories will be brought to life through video art, music, theatre, poetry and other forms of creative documentation.11 of these stories are produced by the Giuvlipen theatre and will be realized as video monologues performed by Roma artistx.
