„Are you not afraid?“, I am naturally asked the moment I enter the car. In the age of Flixbus and Ryanair, people decreasingly decide to hitchhike in order to travel. It became an old-fashioned practice, rather cherished by Beatnicks and my parents‘ generation back in the 80s.

Berlin – Barcelona – Lisbon – Amsterdam – Vienna – trained as an anthropologist, I have to admit that my obsession with hitchhiking doesn‘t just stem from the pleasure of changing location, but the experience of speaking to strangers in the intimate setting of their car.

„What does the future bring?“, I ask them. It inevitably makes my hosts reflect on the uncertain-ness of the present. 10.000 km in conversation with Russian truckers, newly-weds, the driver of a cocaine taxi, the founders of Dutch Hairdressers Award…. A photo-anthropological research into the social psychology of Europe’s highway system, with a destination yet to be determined.
