Stingma is a student short film documentary created by Serina Boynton about tattoo acceptance. People from both sides of the argument are interviewed to give their opinion on tattoos based on family, work, religion, and every day life.

The title ‚Stingma‘ plays off the the word „stigma“. It’s a combination of the „sting“ of a tattooing needle, and the „stigma“ that surrounds tattoos.

Stingma was created as Serina’s capstone project for her Bachelors degree in Digital Cinema at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

Serina says, „As I was filming and editing this documentary, I kept learning new stories and perspectives about tattoos, that my intention for this doc changed and as I was editing, I let the stories tell themselves. I was inspired to do a documentary about tattoos because I have always wanted one, but still do not have any. I come from a family that does not have tattoos and is ethnically jewish. Therefore they encourage me NOT to get one. Yet, I still want one. Eventually I came to learn that there are many other people out there in my same situation, where they want a tattoo, but they don’t know if they should get one. So, I wanted to create this documentary to allows those people to hear other’s opinions on the subject matter, and hopefully help them decided if getting a tattoo is right for them or not.“
