ABOUT STELLA MCCARTNEY:
As one of the fashion industry’s most renowned designers as well as vocal champions of environmental issues, Stella McCartney’s company is a highly successful example of the commercial potential of sustainable, ethically minded businesses. Sustainability not only shapes the company’s every policy but also its underlying business model and brand message. Stella was the first fashion designer ever to appear on the cover of American Vogue in January 2020, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth, and famously designed Meghan Markle’s glamorous wedding reception dress. In this chat, we explore Stella’s extraordinary journey as a designer, what and who inspires her, and her thoughts on the future of the fashion industry.

Stella McCartney was born in London to a family of creators, Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman, who were legendary in public, but ordinary at home. Raised in both the city and the English countryside, she was kept grounded by her late mother and muse Linda – a photographer, vegetarian, and animal rights activist whose values and appreciation for beauty continue to inspire her today.

Stella was appointed the Creative Director of Chloe in Paris in 1997 and the Stella McCartney eponymous luxury brand was launched in 2001 with designs that emphasized sharp tailoring, natural confidence and an effortless attitude. The brand is committed to being an ethical company, responsible and is constantly exploring ways to become more sustainable from designing to store practices and product manufacturing. A lifelong vegetarian, Stella has never used leather, feathers, skin or fur in any of her designs. The brand offers women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and accessories, children’s, swimwear, lingerie, fragrance, and adidas by Stella McCartney collections. In 2012, she designed the Olympic uniforms for Team Great Britain, a task that involved creating over 500 individual pieces.
