Skateboarding Improves Mental Heath

The Independent Online – Thank you! This article really hit home for me!

Skateboarding helps the middle-aged navigate depression, study shows

I turned 40 on 3/20/2020 and felt like I needed a new hobby. One night I was deep in a YouTube rabbit hole and a video of Tony Hawk dropping in on a massive vert ramp came up and the rest is history.

I drove straight over to the local skate shop the next morning and bought a decent starter board. We are fortunate enough to have 3 nice skate parks in Flagstaff and over the last 2 years I have managed not to get injured and can now successfully drop in, carve walls and scratch a little coping from time to time.

If you need a new hobby and think skateboarding sounds fun then go out and do it! Skateboarding changed my life in such a positive way.
It also gives you the opportunity to travel around your state and check out the best parks and pools!

I was actually riding concrete waves this afternoon in Sedona. I’m still riding the vibes from that session as you can see!

Here are my top 4 favorite skaters – Tony Alva – Christian Hosoi – Steve Caballero and Tony Hawk.

If your brand new and want to go carve pools then go get a proper set up! Go get a pool deck – I ride a Tony Alva – Millennium deck, its a sturdy pool deck!
Get some Independent Trucks- 169 or higher and some BONES WHEELS – 58 or 60’s – SPF – skate park formula!

Lastly protect your dome and get some pads cause you will fall and pads and a helmet will help!

If I can start this at 40 then so can you, go early to avoid the kids and be mindful of skatepark etiquette. If you want to see my progression then check out my personal IG account when you get a moment – @theotherbrotherreed

Let’s Go Skate!!!!!!!
