Set and point the compass edge along desired line of travel, rotate the dial or bezel so that North on your dial is pointing North on your map, then line up the compass housing lines with the longitude or north lines on your map, then read the True North direction of travel at the direction of travel indicator on your compass, and add your declination (16-17 in Maine?) to this True Front Bearing (TFB) to get your Magnetic Front Bearing (MFB)
