Founded shortly after Baracoa, Santiago quickly became the most important city in Cuba, before the founding of Havana. Of considerable historical importance, Santiago was the scene of one of the main battles during the Spanish-American War in 1898. This battle marked the beginning of the Cuban independence process. Later, in 1953, the attack on the Moncada barracks marked the start of the Cuban revolution.
