SABR

– – –

a film by ALEXANDER HAESSNER
featuring MARI MALEK & DAME MBAYE
creative directing & styling by JOHN MOORE
produced by MALEK MBAYE PRODUCTIONS and FOKUS FILMS

Mari & Dame like to call themselves Artists with a purpose. We all live in a world where we all have the responsibility to change what we want to see change. Both, Mari and Dame, come from a family of immigrants and refugees (Mari, for example, escaped the war in South Sudan together with her mom and siblings and became refugees).

Both advocate education for underprivileged refugee children and women. Their motto is: human empowerment for all. They provide healing and art therapy for children affected by war and conflict. “Our world should be inclusive, diverse, and representative of all mankind. We raise awareness and funds to support access to education and build schools in Africa (eventually globally) to empower children and women living in conflict and poverty”, says Mari. “All that we do represents how we can all be change-makers and change the things we want to see change in our world. Currently we are supporting children and families affected by COVID19 in Africa and the most vulnerable of the vulnerable communities and families.”

This film is about empowerment, change, and social injustice; it is also about love. Sabr in Islam is a concept and often conflated with passive patience, self-discipline, firmness and endurance, but it is a virtue that encapsulates steadfastness and determination.
