One Man, One Dream, One Journey. Degree Show 2022 – Sundeep Gill

Would you travel back in time or travel to the future? Me, I would travel to the past, because history evokes past relationships and past activities that no longer happen in the present.

This work is inspired by 1920 street and subculture and explores location and dislocation in time and space, and presents a journey set in 1920 and explores a fictional mystery about a young soldier, who dreams about time travelling to 2022. The thoughts and experiences of the soldier relate to the present time and refer to the war in Ukraine.

The streets and older architecture of Leicester influenced the beginnings of my project. I researched activities from the past and how people dressed and behaved, characteristics that have been abandoned, partly because we live in an age where physical existence is less imperative, and our virtual existences are becoming more of the driving force.

This work is to be experienced with audio to be experienced alongside the photos. In the audio the soldier talks about struggling with his mental health after fighting in World War 1.
