Southern Right Whale “Nettie” and her calf made regular circuits from East of Goolwa, to Middleton Point, then past Basham Beach and out to Frenchman Rock… then made their way back on roughly the reverse path later in the day.

After a leisurely travel that morning from Frenchman Rock toward Surfers Beach the calf suddenly reacts to a rapidly approaching vessel and begins tail slapping.

The calf’s tail slapping continued over 35 minutes.

Was she disturbed by the underwater sound, a possible threat… or excitement from some approaching activity… or was she just stirred into playful behaviour: you decide?

At the time of posting this video, it was the last recorded day of Nettie and her calf in Encounter Bay.
