Makram Marzuki ‚Banat Albalad‘ Fashion Show مكرم المرزوقي (بنات البلد) – FESCH.TV

Makram Marzuki ‚Banat Albalad‘ Fashion Show مكرم المرزوقي (بنات البلد) & FESCH.TV:

This show, and its body of work is dedicated to the late Tariq Al Marzuki—Ibn Al Balad—who passed in November of 2023.

THE COLLECTION
We chose a place, a pattern, and a technique to create a cohesive collection based on a simple narrative.

The place is Makram Marzuki’s hometown of Jeddah, where the crown jewel is the historic district of Albalad, where stone façades and ornate Rawashin set the stage. The Mangour—‘lover and beloved’—which are the backbone of the Rawashin, are the inspiration that embellish each textile.

The collection is titled Banat Al Balad, showcased on women who were hand-picked from all 13 regions, to showcase the abundantly diverse beauty we have in the Kingdom.

The patterns were inspired by a vast collection of artwork provided to us by the esteemed artist Ahmed Angawi. These Mangour patterns were then reinterpreted for textiles by Samaher Basha- makh, a recent graduate from The Royal Institute of Traditional Arts. This process, translating woodwork into wearable garments, was made possible by using traditional and nontraditional weaving methods from some of the most celebrated mills. Thus, a new luxury textile was born.

Within the collection, there are a number of looks that call for a second look; velvet looks are woven jacquards, created in-house in one of the last surviving velvet mills. The sparkling evening looks are hand-painted with glitter film ad velvet insertions on a lever lace base.
We tapped into the talents and resources of a Swiss mill that worked meticulously on a guipure Mangour for the bridal look. The silk organza veil was crafted in a French embroidery—which took about 400 hundred hours. A Mihrama and Mudawara made from cotton voile and satin duchesse crowns each look, honoring the custom of the region.
