Katafyki Cave
a film by @nikolaos_panou

In the village of Dryopida, there is a magical cave called Katafyki.
Within the natural cave, labyrinthine corridors have developed covering an area of approximately 3,500 sq.m. while Katafyki retains a constant temperature of 17 degrees Celsius.
Despite the damage it has suffered due to the continuous human presence on the island, it has magnificent and original chambers. The locals used to celebrate Easter and resurrection in the main chamber of the cave that is also called the «great square».
This cave’s galleries were created both naturally (probably by torrents of water) and artificially (by human mining activity, mainly iron mining, from 1835-1940). The plethora of stalactite and stalagmite decoration of the cave is noteworthy. Some formations have even been named by the locals (such as ‘jellyfish,’ ‘little bear,’ ‘embryo,’ and ‘Tower of Babel’).
Breathtaking tunnels a few meters past its natural opening lead to the coastal settlement of “Loutra” from the one side and to “Lefkes” from the other side.
At the time when the Aegean was filled with pirates, the inhabitants of Dryopida sought refuge (“katafigio” in Greek) in this cave, hence the origin of its name.
