Jeff Garner: Sustainable Clothing And The Toxic Effects of Fast Fashion | TEDxGlasgow

West Point Academy hopeful turned sustainable high fashion guru, Jeff Garner is part of a dying breed of southern gentlemen and avid conservationists. Recently Knighted, Sir Garner is also an Emmy winning documentarian, a Smithsonian top artist, and was named Paris Fashion Week designer of the year. Jeff focuses largely on using his platform for change and awareness.

Raised in the lush nature of the Tennessee foothills and traveling the world for sustainable solutions, Jeff has dedicated his life to the pursuit of introducing the synergy between what we wear and how it affects our health. Dividing time between his ethical designs, equestrian pursuits, and surfing, Jeff has a particularly close relationship with nature and his surroundings. Having lost his mother to breast cancer, he is driven by the love of preserving the natural world while protecting the health of loved ones from common carcinogenic practices that remain largely unnoticed.

It is because of this love of the natural world that Mr. Garner has taken up arms in a fight against toxic fashion practices that invade the world around us, and even our own bodies. The topics of ethical clothing and sustainable fashion practices have been constantly at the forefront of his mind since the early days of his career. As an organic fashion designer, utilizing hemp textiles and all-natural plant-based dyes is Garner’s avenue to fight against the status quo.

In this Ted Talk, you will find information on what is happening to our ecosystem and our bodies as a result of fast fashion which raises a few very important questions…

Are your clothes poisoning you with formaldehyde?

Are commercial practices destroying local ecosystems?

And ultimately…

Is there something we can do to make a change?
Speaking on our collective responsibility and power of choice, Jeff suggests we, as consumers, hold all of the power to change these destructive practices. It is we that have the ability to make educated decisions about our spending habits that ultimately drive the machine of consumerism. Sustainable clothing and ethical sourcing can be the future of fashion, but only if consumers demand it.

Learn about some of the disdainful practices of large producers and what we can do right now to make the changes we so desperately need in order to keep our world healthy. Because our species can not thrive on a dying planet, and this planet is the only one we have.
