La basilique Sainte Irene fut construite par l’empereur romain Constantin 1er au début du 4ème siècle de notre ère. Cette église fut la cathédrale de Constantinople jusqu’à la construction de Sainte Sophie un demi-siècle plus tard.Hagia Irene signifie Paix Divine. Cette égise préfigure l’architecture de Sainte Sophie.
