Saint Irene Basilica was built by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in the early 4th century AD. This church was the cathedral of Constantinople until the construction of Hagia Sofia half a century later. Hagia Irene means Divine Peace. This church foreshadows the architecture of Saint Sophia.
