Indigenous Round Feat. Renai Fejo for Untold Brand Studio

BRIEF

Renai Fejo approached me to tell her story as an Indigenous woman and athlete trying to push the conversation forward in Australia. Renai is organising an Indigenous Basketball Round for her club, and needed to show its significance, what will take place, and details around the incredible artwork designed for her uniform and shoes.

EXECUTION

We began with a talking-head style interview to help carve out the narrative in our first session, and shot Renai in her uniform after having her read an artist description of each element of the design. This laid the foundation for the story and helped determine the B-roll we wanted to capture in our second session of filming.

With a strong story locked in, we attacked B-roll with confidence knowing exactly what would punctuate points. Renai offered to paint her face in a traditional fashion, which added another layer to an already rich set of footage.

Post production saw us meticulously match footage to narrative, and create three acts to take the viewer on a journey. Each act has its own feeling and message, and therefore colour grading and scoring these acts was important. Cooler colours and eerie didgeridoo music were chosen for example at the beginning, whereas warmer colours and uplifting music bookended the video to leave viewers inspired.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Telling a story like Renai’s must be done sensitively, and we approached it with a sense of responsibility to ensure we did this remarkable young woman justice. This could have easily been a 45 minute documentary, but sticking to a short format was preferred, which meant choosing what to include was the hardest part of the project. We felt spoilt to be tasked with such a rich and visually impactful project, and are pleased this video helped Renai in her journey as a trailblazing indigenous woman.
