The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA)—the birthplace of contemporary Indigenous American art—has been the educational home for esteemed and innovative artists, writers, filmmakers, performers, and leaders since 1962. Our graduates include 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States Joy Harjo (Mvskoke [Creek]) ’68, internationally renowned fashion designer Patricia Michaels (Taos Pueblo) ’89, fine art photographer Cara Romero (Chemehuevi Indian Tribe) ’05, and multidisciplinary artist Cannupa Hanska Luger (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Lakota) ’11. Our students come from across the globe, representing nearly one hundred federally recognized tribes.

Named one of the top art institutions globally by UNESCO and the International Association of Art, IAIA offers several educational pathways taught from Indigenous perspectives, centering community and encouraging critical inquiry, exploration, and experimentation. Our low-residence graduate programs and online class options make studying at IAIA convenient for working professionals and students of all ages.
