My video essay is about how BTS defied gender stereotypes and has inspired yet empowered many people especially the younger generations around the world. Why I chose this specific topic is because K-pop stars and politics hardly mix in contemporary South Korea. Although some hip-hop acts, such as Epik High, tackle contentious issues, many idol groups adhere to a polished, apolitical template that has proved to be successful. BTS has been publicly debating LGBTQ rights, mental health, and the pressure to perform since their debut, all of which are taboo topics in South Korea. BTS also provided a welcome break from what some reviewers and fans hate about the group, straddling the balance between upholding a positive reputation and writing critical songs.

BTS has challenged masculinity by wearing makeup, skirts and fishnets for the Singles Magazine back in 2016 therefore, BTS are not afraid to be androgynous, which is a kind of defiance toward rigid notions of masculinity. By depicting men with cars and women as objects, the media further contributes to the perpetuation of gender hegemony. Their presence would not be acknowledged if anything lies between them. BTS, on the other hand, is deconstructing the stereotype of what a guy is meant to be.
