God Luck Hope

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

The viewer journeys through a luxury London urban development during which the space shifts from a neo-liberal estate to a more fragmented scene, where the layers of history and memory lie underneath. Temporally the journey also signals a travel backwards from contemporary times to the Victorian era. The film employs digital animation, 16mm and ink paintings.

The location is inspired by a real place I discovered on a derive around Canary Wharf – GodLuckHope Island. This area is typical of the new gentrified urban spaces of London. These spaces are made by and for the international cosmopolitan elites. Everything is an advert – perfect lifestyle, yoga, fusion foods. Complete erasure of the past. Research into historical archives reveals the legacy of slavery, East India Company docks, toxic industry and slums poverty in the area. GodLuckHope island, is emblematic of spaces alienated from community and history.
