GLOBAL GIRL MEDIA SA – PROMO VIDEO

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

WHO WE ARE:
GoGirl Media Initiative known as GlobalGirl Media South Africa (GGMSA) is a South African registered NPO/non-profit educational media organisation that trains young women to be citizen journalists, media practitioners and assists them in producing short-format, POV-style videos and blogs for digital distribution.

BACKGROUND:
Global Girl Media South Africa was started in 2010, during the World Cup, by a group of documentary filmmakers from the United States to ensure that the story of this monumental event was captured and amplified through the representation of young female voices. Since 2010 GGMSA has successfully trained approximately 100 young women with media technical skills.

PROGRAMME FOCUS:
We promote the voice and leadership capacity of teenage girls in under-served communities by teaching them digital storytelling and journalism skills, designed to improve scholastic achievement, ignite community activism and promote the entrepreneurial practice.
We train girls in tangible 21st-century digital/ STEAM skills to make them better communicators and competitive in today’s highly media-driven job market. Girls become agents of change by sharing digital media content that improves their lives in their communities and leads them towards successful careers in media or any other field they choose.
We provide an ongoing pipeline from training to further education and employment opportunities through our mentorship program, partnering with journalists, broadcasters, filmmakers, bloggers and other media professionals in the community.
Provide scholarship opportunities and travel opportunities available for graduates.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
We have successfully trained approximate 100 young women in the past ten years. Over 50% of our trainees have been well placed in media-related job positions and continue to nurture their voices and self-expression through their respective career ventures. Our trainees have produced over 60 impact-led and advocacy short-format, POV-style videos through our skills and development training programs.

In 2021 we produced three documentaries:

Strength of a girl child – a film on the story of a girl who had to head her household.
Power to She – A film on female entrepreneurship.
Melancholy – A film on depression struggles and mental health.
Trained a cohort of 15 girls in 2021.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVELS:
We were able to expose our members to international travel and events; Sundance Film Festival, The London Trust Women Symposium, The Global Aids Conference in Washington DC and the AU African Girls Summit.

GGMSA amplifies and activates the voices of young women through technical training and personal enrichment programs i.e Master Classes with industry experts, Personal Finance workshops, Camera & Sound Operation Workshops, Story Development Workshops, Documentary Workshops.

CHALLENGES:
Sustainability of training programs for our mentees.
Sustainability of job opportunities for our alumni network and trainees.
Navigating the socio-economic issues that our trainees grapple creates challenges for the programme.

WISH LIST/ OUR ASK:
To create a sustainable and dedicated Digital Lab to support our training and the production of content that speaks to the lives and voices of young women.

To facilitate two training sessions per year over a five year period.

To create a mentorship programme which supports young women in their ambitions.

To facilitate access to the job market through internships and job placement to create a pipeline to build skills and networks.
