Fobney Island Fun Day 18.09.22

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

This 3 minute film captures the magic of the Fobney Fun Day – a collaborative event as part of Heritage Open Days. The event was run by Nature Nurture and Thames Water with
support from The Canal and River Trust, The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust and Friends of
Fobney conservation group.

We reached over 300 people from Reading. Active travel was encouraged, and we
hope this event encouraged a greater respect for our waterways and a better understanding
of the challenges facing our wetlands and rivers. Thames Water also reached a wide
audience with water saving tips which are vital during periods of drought along with their
plans for renovating the turbine house.

The activities offered were:
*A watery welcome from our team of pirates.
*See which Amazing Inventions kept the water flowing through Reading.
*Take a trip on board ‚Matilda Too‘, the new Kennet & Avon Canal Trust boat.
*Have a go at being a junior lock keeper with the Canal & River Trust
*Try your hand at waterway themed arts and crafts.
Pond dipping and learning about freshwater ecology.
*Hear more about the canal’s history and how you can enjoy it today with the Kennet and
Avon Canal Trust.
*Bug hunting – with nets, ID charts and bug viewing pots.
*Waterway guided walks – exploring both nature and heritage of this fascinating site.
*History talks about Fobney Lock.
*Water saving and other eco-tips with the Thames Water outreach team.

We hope this event will make the relationship between these organisations closer and allow
for similar events in the future. We can all work together to shine a light on Reading’s
waterways, learn how to protect and enhance them and how to conserve the precious
resource that is water.
