„We had a Simmental bull. That son-of-a-bitch would catch you in a heart beat. He’d catch your horse, he’d catch you when you were afoot, he’d catch you in the pasture, he’d catch you in the cow pens… He did not like full grown people. And he laid in my front yard. And cattle have babysitters when they go graze; there’ll be one or two cows, that will stay with all the calves, while the rest of the herd goes and grazes. Well they elected this ol‘ bull to be their babysitter.

He’d lay there in the front yard, bout, a hundred foot from the house, 75. Laying down cow fashion. Judd’s playing right outside the door. He’s like two… Bout two years old, playing outside the door, in the sand. He used to get up underneath the trailer and spin the damn wheels on it. The old axle; he’d just sit there and spin the wheels, he was infatuated with that. Anyway, he, uh, I didn’t hear him under the trailer. That was, this was back when me and your granma had split up, and I was playing Mr. mom pretty hard. And uh, I look out there, and here’s Judd: curled up, asleep, in the fork in that ol bull’s legs, his front feet–snuggled up to him like a big dog.

I don’t know whether to shit or go blind. Cause I don’t wanna go out there an‘ spook the bull, he’s gonna stand up. I mean, I, I don’t, I–Judd’s asleep, he ain’t gonna wake up. You know, I can call him all I want to, he ain’t gonna hear me. Yeah, I don’t know what I’m gonna do.

That old bull just layin there chewing his cud, looked over at him. I guess cause he was a baby it was alright with him. And directly Judd woke up; stretched, patted the ol bull, climbed up on his back; ol bull just laid there. I’m like ‚Judd, Get away from that bull n come here.‘ ‚He’s my friend.‘ ‚I don’t care. Get away from the damn bull.‘

That bull heard me talking. He stood up, looked at me, pawed the ground, shook his head–I’m like, ‚I’m in the house Motherfucker, just, let me be.‘

Scared the shit out of me. He done it more than once! If I didn’t pay, if I didn’t watch where the hell he was at, he’d be out there sittin ‚longside that bull. 

Yeah. Him and that bull was buddies. That bull, that bull liked Judd. But I’m serious–if that, if you was out walkin across the pasture and that bull seen you–he’s gonna come to you. And he meant to get you. But he liked Judd.“
