Fashion & Cliate – What is the relationshi and what needs to haen? – FESCH.TV

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

Fashion makes a sizeable contribution to climate change.

In 2016, the United Nation signed a treaty to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. This is known as the Paris Agreement and pursues efforts to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which is often referred to as the 1.5 degree pathway. From rising sea levels to extreme rainfall, and more powerful heat waves, the consequences of climate change can no longer be ignored, either by society or the fashion industry, which we’ll see many impacts on its operations in the years ahead. In 2018, the fashion industry produced 2.1 billion tons of CO2. This represents 4% of global carbon emissions, an emission share larger than that of France, Germany, and the UK combined.

Fashion needs to act on climate, and we need to change things fast, because if we continue on our current path, we will miss our 2030 emissions targets by 50%, and this will accelerate global warming. So how does the fashion industry take on the challenge of massive CO2 reductions?

The good news is that there are tangible actions companies and other stakeholders can take—at scale—to put fashion on a more sustainable path. For example, increasing efficiency in material use and production, designing out waste and extending product life through reuse or remanufacturing can significantly reduce emissions across the value chain. But innovative business models are also critical, as they can provide new ways to generate value while using fewer resources.

What’s more, technologies such as 3D printing have great potential to help fashion become more circular while also reducing its environmental footprint.

With The Inflation Reduction Act, the latest bill tackling climate change recently announced as the nation’s biggest investment in the fight against climate change, a $369 billion push for cleaner energy use – is real, legislated change finally on its way?
