excerpt from Nature and her Laws, 2020

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

This is a text and sound work made during the lockdown of the pandemic. In 1770 Mirabaud wrote “The System of Nature”, a haunting work that highlights humankind’s alienation from nature, stressing that it is only by following the laws of Nature that we will be freed from being slaves to fiction and “chimeras”; seen today in the shape of fake news and alternative facts. I selected the most poignant essays that speaks directly to the need to follow, not fight against, the laws of nature and cut away the syllables of the musical scale – do, re, mi, etc. – leaving the text punctuated with holes (seen here in the white flecks scattered across the negative reprints of the pages). The pages were reduced in scale, rolled into scrolls, and played on a hand-crank piano on my rooftop during the dawn hours of the lockdown. The audio captures the sound of the score being played and the dawn chorus.

The panels of punctuated text are double-sided allowing light to travel through the work.
