This week’s reading found in the Book of Deuteronomy, from chapter 1:1 to 3:22 begins the fifth and final book of the Five Books of Moses. Moses begins his final monologue, five weeks before his passing. He recounts the story of the Israelite’s travel through the desert, placing emphasis on, and rebuking them for, the story of the spies which Moses connects to him not being allowed to cross over the Jordan and live in the promised land. He describes Israel’s conquest of the Emorites and the Bashanites and how the tribes of Reuven, Gad and Manasseh will live in that area.
