Questions to Help You Define Your Driving Vision

A driving vision inspires you to keep going, to keep pushing forward even when you feel overwhelmed or exhausted. It’s your ultimate motivation and the thing that keeps you moving toward your goal even when it seems like you’re not getting anywhere. While defining your driving vision sounds easy enough, many people struggle with the concept because they don’t know where to start or because they are more interested in making money than doing what they love. The following four questions will help you get started on your journey to define your driving vision and ultimately succeed as an entrepreneur.

1) What’s Important To You?
Are you looking for wealth, freedom, a sense of accomplishment or some other intangible? If you are not crystal clear on what’s important to you, your vision is less likely to come true. Knowing where you want to go allows you take deliberate steps towards achieving it. You also get a chance to assess if it’s something worth pursuing. For example, would you be willing to dedicate half your life working towards a goal that doesn’t excite or interest you? Are there more important things in life than being rich?

2) Where Are You Now?
Before you can determine where you’re going, it’s important to know where you are now. Think of it as your starting point. Defining your present situation will help clarify what strengths and experiences make up your current portfolio. In some cases, identifying your now status may reveal an obvious next step—or even multiple steps—that aren’t apparent right away.

3) How Do You Want to Feel?
The fastest way to accomplish your goals is feeling good about what you’re doing. If you feel miserable about your job, it’s very difficult to perform at your peak. However, if you feel really great about your career and what you do every day, it just clicks and happens easily. This is why defining how you want to feel at work should be one of your first steps in defining your driving vision. Ask yourself questions like: How do I want to feel on Mondays? How do I want people who meet me for the first time (colleagues, clients, etc.) to react? What makes me angry at work? What kind of projects will make me excited when they come across my desk? And many more.

4) What Does Success Look Like?
What does success look like for you? Do you want to make a certain amount of money, have a certain lifestyle, travel somewhere new, or be with someone special? Sit down and think about what your goals are in life. If you’re not yet sure what your long-term vision is for yourself, it may help to sit down with a friend and talk about what your dreams are—and if there are any big pieces missing. Brainstorming about your future will help clarify things for you (and may also give you some guidance on whether starting your own business is actually what you want).
