Decora Dreams is a single-player online game that centers on Shoichi Aoki’s photographs of Harajuku Street Fashion showcased in the online MAAS collection. This is a multi-layered and non-linear interactive experience, with the primary focus on contextualizing the photographs that have been originally extracted from the iconic FRUITS magazine published by Shoichi Aoki, in an immersive and playful way. The game world is set in a teenager’s bedroom in Tokyo approximately 24 years ago, where they are a member of the Dekora subculture that was popular during this time of the Harajuku fashion movement.

The audience plays in a first-persons perspective and explore this bedroom space, with little easter eggs relevant to the context, for example, an open magazine can be found on a bed which if clicked closes and reveals itself to be a copy of FRUITS magazine. In this room, the photographs of Shoichi Aoki are displayed on a wall, like posters you would find in a teenager’s bedroom. Once the audience examines the photos more closely and jumps into them, the associated text is revealed describing the interests and adornments worn by the photographed subjects. In the other corner of the room is a mini styling game, which lets you select items of clothing inspired by the photographed subjects, that provides contextual information on popular brands and crucial elements that define Decora fashion. At the end of this mini-game, you can take a photo of yourself in the selected items to see how you would look, similar to how a Harajuku fashionista may have been photographed by Shoichi himself.

This game world ultimately aims to provide a cohesive experience of the photographs shown online, creating an insightful and exploratory narrative for the audience on how these photos and the Harajuku fashion movement may have been experienced by a young fan in Tokyo back in 1998.
