I have never been more inspired to write, and to write well, than when I was at Sacatar in 2008, because the place and its people were so beautiful that I felt filled constantly with the desire to create something that might honor that beauty. During my residency, I finished the first draft of my published novel “The Paternity Test”, in which one of the main characters is Brazilian, and I would like to think that my experiences in Bahia helped me to give her the fully rounded humanity she deserved. My sense of kinship with the region and its people continues to inspire me.
At Sacatar, I plan to work on a collection of travel-related personal essays (including one essay that takes place in Bahia), revolving around questions of belonging, alienation, and identity. The journeys I recount—both geographical and emotional—suggest that it is only by forcing myself into the position of outsider that I am able to understand what makes me feel most at home. Sacatar, so far from my home in Boston and yet a place I feel so deeply drawn to, should be a perfect place for me to reflect on such questions.

Nunca me senti mais inspirado para escrever, e escrever bem, do que quando estive no Sacatar em 2008, porque o lugar e sua gente eram tão bonitos que me sentia constantemente cheio do desejo de criar algo que pudesse honrar essa beleza. Durante a minha residência, terminei o primeiro rascunho do meu romance publicado “O Teste de Paternidade”, no qual uma das personagens principais é brasileira, e gostaria de pensar que minhas experiências na Bahia me ajudaram a dar a ela a humanidade plena que ela merecia. Minha sensação de familiaridade com a região e seu povo ainda continua a me inspirar.
No Sacatar, pretendo trabalhar em uma coletânea de ensaios pessoais relacionados a viagens (incluindo um ensaio que acontece na Bahia), girando em torno de questões de pertencimento, alienação e identidade. As viagens que conto – tanto geográficas quanto emocionais – mostram que é apenas me colocando na posição de forasteiro que sou capaz de reconhecer o que me faz sentir em casa. O Sacatar, apesar de tão longe da minha casa em Boston, é ainda assim, um lugar pelo qual me sinto tão profundamente atraído e que será o lugar perfeito para refletir sobre essas questões.
