Coe in Drag – FESCH.TV

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

Drag has always been an artform which transcends and fuses performance art, theatre, music, fashion, costume, set design, and of course, makeup and wigs together with oneself as the canvas, but now, queens have become an embodiment of Warholian pop art, including obtaining mass media fame. Some would say that its authentic roots have been lost along the way to mainstream fame.

Come in Drag aims to portray my understanding of drag through representing all aspects of the tradition as an art form, gradually being refined along the way in order to express my specific point of view. My short film intends to conceptualise the true meaning of drag through a series of shots portraying drag queens in their natural element, a voice over interview featuring specific queens talking about their initial descent into drag and how it has become a prevalent role in their lives and careers.

This collaborative piece of work coincides with the sense of internal empowerment felt through transforming from one self into another through self expression which is the basis of drag itself, whether the emphasis is on embodying one’s own alter-ego psyche, the creation of a whole new personae or simply reflecting a true sense of self despite, and because of, the deviation from societal norms.
