FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

Chandubi Beel or lake Chandubi was formed when a devastating earthquake hit the Garo hills area brdering Assam and Meghalaya on June 12th 1897. There are several legends associated with how the lake came to be called by its present name, ChanDubi.
A legend says that the Khasi tribals living among the surrounding Garo hills used to perform puja in the honour of Chan Ubleis near a ‚Dubi‘ (water body), hence the place started to be called Chan Ubleis Dubi. Over time the local Rabha Kachari tribals living in surrounding area of Assam started calling this as Chan Dubi.
Another legend goes that a very famus and rich trader by the name of Chanda Saudagar used the Kulsi river and this lake as a transit point to the neighbourin state of Meghalaya on his trade voyages and hence the lake becameknown by his name, Chanda Dubi.
