Brontosaurus Boogie (vocal version)

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS

This song begins with imaginary dinosaur calls to stimulate the listeners‘ imagination. The children might like to make up their own dinosaur sounds and explain why their dinosaur calls in that way. This can develop into a science lesson about sound, why birds sing, and the different distances different pitches travel. It links with a later song about a kākāpō, where real kākāpō sounds are used.

„Brontosaurus Boogie“ is a song to dance to. Let the children make up their own dinosaur dance, either individually or as a group. Children could also learn the different dance forms mentioned in the song: the jive, the twist, the boogie, and disco dancing.

Children can explore the idea of size by all becoming part of one dinosaur and moving as one.

These are definitely Southern Hemisphere dinosaurs in this song! Apart from in the choruses, Cook Islands drums are used on beats two and four, where a snare drum would normally be used. It gives a solid, earthy feeling, which should help children dance with deliberately heavy feet.

On the last chorus, the teacher may like to divide the class in half, half singing the phrase and the other half responding.
