Brief Impressions: The Nets by Seong Moy, 1963 Woodcut

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

This week’s installment of “Brief Impressions” features a 1972 lithograph titled “The Nets” by
Seong Moy.

Using primarily black gestural marks to mimic the movement and shape nets create when cast,
and offsetting them with a tapered perspective in white negative space, Moy creates a unique and personable effect for viewers with this piece. Incorporating both classic Chinese styles and
formal techniques of Abstract Expressionism, Moy draws his audience’s attention to analyze the mesmerizing net pattern. He is able to hold onto their attention as their eyes travel up, over, and around the piece, by encouraging them to navigate the juxtaposition of blocked colors and
silhouettes, with clusters of criss-crossed lines. Provoking questions with minimal clarity and
skill without overstimulation, Moy demonstrates his mastery in lithography and woodcuts.

You can visit this print in our exhibition “The Power of Dark Matter” now through May 3rd, or
listen along with Susan Soriente, our Curator for the Gladys LUX Print Collection for a remote
and informative experience.
