I pitched this 2 years ago in class after filming the very colorful fashion film I made. This was the antithesis of it. I didn’t want to see color, I just wanted to feel it to be as dark as it can possibly be. Probably the darkness that I was feeling during 2020 I wanted it to be represented. This was created thinking already on how to work around some covid protocols, hence, the full face masks. This is not an ode to Kim or Kanye’s fashion choices, those happened a year after. Fast forward to Fall 2021, when I was able to finally shoot it in school when we were allowed to have face-to-face classes. It was one of the most fulfilling shoots I’ve ever had because I was surrounded by a team that was so talented and had the best work ethic. I felt supported that I can take a step back during the actual shoot and focus on directing. A lot of my collaborators were challenged too in executing such a high concept project. From the lighting, the set, costume, special effects makeup, visual effects, and makeup. We were all out of our comfort zone but the beauty of working with great people is, they are up for the challenge, and boy they delivered! I’m really proud of this project. It’s my swan song from my time at Art Center. Here it is… BLACK SOUL!
