BFA+MFA 2021 Exhibition – A Look at the Grahic Design Progra – FESCH.TV

FESCH.TV INFORMIERT:

In the latest of our videos on the thesis projects by our graduating Class of 2021, Graphic Design Associate Professor Basma Hamdy talks to Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Cherif Amor about the BFA+MFA 2021 exhibition, new frontiers in graphic design, and about how it is expanding into cultural production, cultural sustainability, social innovative design, and social change.

“At the core of our teaching is the idea of research and expanding ideas beyond just the medium and trying to think of conceptual work,” Basma says.

“What is at the heart of what you are doing, what are you trying to express with your work, and that the work really needs to connect to an audience. It’s not just enough to make work that’s visually attractive and beautiful and aesthetic, but it’s also important to have a strong concept behind the work.

„We have students dealing with different disciplines like philosophy and psychology, but also expanding in medium to things like filmmaking and printing on fabric and fashion design, so really it’s the medium and the topic coming together to form the student thesis, and the work in the end is much richer and deeper because of that.“

The video shows the works by the Graphic Design graduates from the Class of 2021, which includes thesis projects that deal with everything from emotional wellbeing, and Arabic typography, to third-culture kids, and packaging design.

The guest curator for the Graphic Design section of the exhibition was Aisha Al-Sowaidi, a VCUarts Qatar alumna and Director of the Liwan design studios and labs at Qatar Museums.
