Ashura marks the tenth day of the holy month of Muharram and relates to the tragic ‘Battle of Karbala’ incident in which the 7th-century revolutionary leader Imam Hussein ibn Ali was martyred. Millions of Muslims across the world observe the day of Ashura to remember Imam Hussein’s sacrifice and dignified stance on social justice.

This was Kargil last year Aug 2021 and we bring to you hitherto unseen visuals from our thematic video documentation of the Mourning of Muharram on the day of Ashura. This is an important day for the locals in the Kargil Valley. This is a day of introspection, community service, and solidarity as the people are guided by the values that Imam Hussein held true for millions to this day. Values that symbolise freedom, justice, harmony, love, unity, and courage in the face of tyranny and seemingly insurmountable opposition.
