1 Kings 13:1-10
The young prophet in our text lived in a time of political upheaval and spiritual apostasy. King Solomon had died but when his son Rehoboam brought Israel together to be crowned king, the ten northern tribes rebelled because of high tax rates and made a guy named Jeroboam king. Jeroboam promised to lower taxes and make life easier, which included building a place of worship in Bethel, so northern Israelites would not have to travel so far to Jerusalem. Since all the godly Levites moved south so they could obey God, Jeroboam had to lower the standards to be a priest as 12:31 states.
