Editor’s Note: Andy Bowe chose to talk about his travels with his father at his dad’s 89th birthday party:

Dad … Everyone:
My Dad has done so much for me but my travels with my Dad has been an eye-opening experience that I wouldn’t have been able to do without him. As you can imagine, my Dad is a lot offun to travel with.

In this hemisphere, we took a trip to Dearborn, Michigan where my Dad and me went to the Henry Ford Museum and saw a bunch of cars, and other inventions. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend it. Later, we also travelled on the Pullman Rail Journeys from Chicago to New Orleans and back. What a luxury rail travel line that was! It didn’t end there… we went via Rail Canadian from Vancouver, British Columbia to Jasper, Alberta. I had never been to Canadian Rocky Mountains and it was beautiful. And finally, we went on the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland, OR.

My Dad and I have been on numerous train trips around the world also. In Africa, we’ve been to the countries of Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania. In case you didn’t know, Zanzibar and Tanginica were merged in 1964 into Tanzania which was then free from British rule and declared independence just a year after Kenya’s. It was a trip of a lifetime because of the unforgettable experience of seeing wild animals in their natural habitat. I’m a big fan of Lion King, but this was the real thing!

In Asia, we’ve been to India, the Kingdoms of Cambodia and Thailand, the Republics of Indonesia and Singapore and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It was on these trips that I became a huge fan of a band from Myanmar named Iron Cross and they sing in Burmese. On another trip we flew into Dubai and then to Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. We did a week long train. trip on Indian railways across northern India. Getting off the train, we even rode on an Indian elephant… excited and scary but a lot of fun! As you can imagine, because of all this travel, I’m as much a fan of Cricket as I am of Baseball.

In Europe, we rode the TGB train from Paris to Aix le Bain. It was terrific. It was so much faster than the trains we have in the US – 186MPH! Amazing to go that fast. We also went on several cruises to Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Estonia, and Ukraine. You all know about my Dad’s affliction with B-E-D? Those cruises didn’t help with his Buffet Eating Disorder.

Dad… Thanks for so much. I Love you! Happy Birthday!
